Camping museum in Bad Waldsee

Travel stories come to the Kornhaus

While we create our new permanent exhibition at the Erwin Hymer Museum, we are bringing the history of caravanning and motorhome travel right into Bad Waldsee’s old town. From 21 November 2026, the historic Kornhaus hosts a camping museum with a difference. Discover historic vehicles and stories of Alpine passes, new beginnings and true pioneering spirit.

A day out in Bad Waldsee

Ready for a short trip back in time?

Join us on a journey to the years of Germany’s economic miracle. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, many people discovered a new longing for the south. Our pop-up exhibition at the Kornhaus explores the clever ideas of the first caravan pioneers, from 1930 to the early 1960s.

Find out how designers from the aircraft industry developed lightweight, streamlined and sturdy bodies. See how inventive families were when cooking, living and sleeping in tiny spaces. Germany’s first great dream destinations also come to life: experience the carefree lifestyle awaiting travellers in sunny Italy after an adventurous drive across the Alps.

Before returning to the present, enjoy an exclusive sneak peek at what awaits you this spring in the Erwin Hymer Museum’s completely redesigned permanent exhibition, and share your wishes and ideas with us.

Get creative at market time

On Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm, our special exhibition at the Kornhaus turns into a place for crafts.

While parents stroll around the market, children can cut, paint and stick to their heart’s content. Five drop-in craft activities alternate weekly: an “On the Road” collage, paper-plate art featuring sea creatures or caravans, a travel dream in a matchbox and a colourful folded motorhome. There’s something new to discover on every visit.

The special exhibition awaits in the heart of Bad Waldsee’s historic old town. As the Kornhaus is right in the centre, there is no parking at the building itself. Please use the town’s public car parks. The short walk to the exhibition is a lovely opportunity to explore the picturesque lanes.
